Matthew Downie

Matthew Nathan Downie

Science and Chemistry Teacher

Matthew completed his undergraduate MChem degree in Chemistry with Forensic Science at the University of Leicester before his PGCE at Nottingham Trent University in 2015. He has since taught chemistry and environmental systems and societies in six countries, including the UAE, Mexico and most recently Japan. He has also been an examiner for the Edexcel exam board for A-Level chemistry and uses the insights gained to guide his students in their approaches to assessments. Matthew is passionate about chemistry and sees it as important in developing students’ abilities to apply logic and reasoning to solve challenges.

He firmly believes that learning is an ongoing process and that there is always more to discover. Mistakes are to be expected, yet true failure only arises when one ‘gives up’. Outside of teaching, Matthew enjoys archery and rugby as well as learning languages, including Japanese, German and Spanish.
