Ninth grade is often the time when students begin thinking more seriously not only about grades, but also about the kind of environment in which they want to spend the next four years of their education. That is why many families consider changing schools at this stage. Tomas Laukaitis, a tenth-grade student, shares what learning at Erudito Licėjus is like and how grades 9–10 differ from a typical school experience.
Why did you choose to study at Erudito Licėjus?
I joined Erudito Licėjus in fifth grade, which was the same year the school opened in Vilnius. I don’t remember having many options at the time, but I do remember my parents telling me that the school had an excellent reputation in Kaunas.
What surprised you the most when you started studying at Erudito Licėjus?
What surprised me the most was the school’s Project Lesson, where students work in teams and complete four major projects throughout the academic year: Business, Erudito Talks, STEAM, and Arts. I really enjoyed this independent and hands-on approach to learning.
In your opinion, how does studying in grades 9–10 at Erudito Licėjus differ from your previous learning experience?
In grades 9 and 10, students are prepared for the upcoming IBDP years. As a result, there is a stronger focus on English and project-based learning activities such as debates, discussions, research projects, and more.
Which lessons, projects, or activities have been the most interesting to you, and why?
If I had to choose one activity that I enjoy the most and that you would be unlikely to find in another school, it would be the Entrepreneurship Projects. During these projects, students develop a business idea, create a business plan, and present it to a panel of judges.
Do you feel that you can ask questions, participate in discussions, and express your own opinions at school?
Absolutely. There is no lesson at Erudito Licėjus where students are not encouraged to ask questions or share their opinions. In many subjects, such as English and Economics, discussions are actively encouraged and form an important part of the lesson.
How do teachers help you grow—both when you are struggling and when you are looking for greater challenges?
In most subjects, teachers allow students to improve at least one grade per semester. Many teachers also use a cumulative points system, where students can earn points by completing additional tasks during lessons. Once enough points are collected, they can be converted into a grade. This encourages students not only to complete required work but also to take initiative and go beyond expectations.
What have you learned at Erudito Licėjus that you probably would not have learned from textbooks alone?
Frequent debates, presentations, and especially the Erudito Talks project have significantly improved my public speaking and communication skills. The large number of projects has also taught me how to work effectively in a team and even how to lead one.
What would you say to students and parents who are considering joining Erudito Licėjus in Grade 9?
If you are looking to gain a unique and prestigious education through the IBDP programme, I highly recommend joining Erudito Licėjus from Grade 9. This gives you time to adapt to the school’s learning approach and prepare effectively for the demanding but rewarding IB years ahead.
Tomas was particularly inspired by the school’s project-based learning, entrepreneurship education, and opportunities to actively participate in discussions. His experience shows that students in Grades 9–10 are not only preparing for the IBDP programme but are also developing skills that will serve them well far beyond the classroom.
